Sacred Heart Primary School is committed to child safety.
We believe all children have the right to feel safe and to be safe.

Acknowledgement of Traditional Custodians

Sacred Heart acknowledges the traditional custodians
of the land on which this school is built.
We commit ourselves to working in partnership with
Aboriginal people for reconciliation and justice.

Lord, open up our hearts so that we may hear the message you teach of a world in which the wrongs of the past are recognised - a world in which a reconciled people walk and talk together sharing stories; a world in which all burn with the desire to have your peace and justice reign. We ask this in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Good Afternoon Everyone

Lots of exciting events are coming up this week.  Our Fire Carriers ceremony 11.30 taking place today and our Cross Country event at Chinaman's Island on Thursday. It is great to have these events up and running again.

Over the past couple of weeks staff and student absentees have been unusually high. With some rearranging and juggling we have been able to cover all classes with minimal disruptions. A reminder to parents if your child tests positive for Covid to notify us. If your child has no symptoms, they may return after seven days but if they are still unwell please allow them to take the time to recover before returning to school.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) has been taking place over the past two weeks. Well done to all those in Yr 3 and 5 who completed the assessment and did your best. Thank you to all the staff for ensuring all went smoothly.

Next week is National Reconciliation Week. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme, Be Brave. Make Change. is a challenge to us all to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for all.

 Have a great week Everyone

Project Compassion
A big thank you to everyone for your generosity towards our Project Compassion and Caritas Ks Fundraiser. The school community have raised $1756 which is a wonderful effort going to a very worthy cause. It is very important to note that Caritas spends only 4.4% on administration costs to achieve all their wonderful work, making it the Australian charity with one of the lowest if not the lowest administration expenditure.

Fr Steve
This week Father Steve has had surgery. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers.

Sacred Heart Day
We will be celebrating Sacred Heart Day with Sacred Heart College on Friday June 24th with Mass, a shared BBQ lunch with the college and then returning here for a tabloid sports afternoon. This is always a special celebration and one that we hope you can all join us for.

Christian Meditation
We continue to meditate every Tuesday and Wednesday morning which links very well with The Resilience Project and the themes of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. Christian Meditation is then followed by Win the Morning ,Win the Day  where students are asked to think about something they are grateful for and also name how they can be the best part of someone else’s day. Our Year 6 leaders are leading the Meditation on a Wednesday morning and doing a super job.

Sacraments,
Thanks to all parents and carers who have returned the enrolment forms for Confirmation and Eucharist. I will be in touch as soon as I can confirm some dates.

Laudato Si
This week is Laudato Si Week which commemorates the Popes encyclical about Care for our World. We have been asking children to think about our playground, recycling and general respect for our Environment. Our world is a gift from God in which we are caretakers for generations to come.

Have a great week all,

YEAR 6 LEADERSHIP TEAM
CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)
Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are a part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is: • $125 for primary school students • $225 for secondary school students

State AFL Trials

Congratulations to Henry Donovan and Mac Hargreaves who have been successful in making one of the Primary Schools AFL country squads of approx. 23 players.

From the Wodonga area to Shepparton, Bendigo and all districts in between, the boys trialled twice in the past two weeks in Benalla and Bendigo and were successful.

They will head down to Bulleen, Melbourne this Sunday May 29th to trial against the Metropolitan and Country players from around the state.

Good luck to Henry & Mac on the next stage. You've done our school proud. Thank you to the parents and families who have gone along and supported the boys at the trials.

The Resilience Project – Parent and Carer Hub

This next presentation from The Resilience Project is all about Empathy and Kindness.

Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practise this through being kind and compassionate towards other people.

Brain imaging data shows that being kind to others registers in the brain as more like eating chocolate than like fulfilling an obligation to do what’s right (e.g., eating brussel sprouts)!

Research shows that practising empathy, such as performing acts of kindness, taps into our brain’s ‘mirror neurons’, builds compassion and our behaviour becomes more social and community-based.

Here’s an activity to practise empathy and kindness:

  1. Reflect on someone in your life who could benefit from an act of kindness today. It could be a friend who would love some affirmation about their work, your pet who deserves an extra treat, or a family member who would love a phone call or text message.

  2. Make a plan for who you are going to show an act of kindness to, and what you are going to do.

  3. If you want to add accountability to your plan, share it with someone else and encourage them to do the same thing.

  4. Follow up with each other in a few days time, to ask how it went!
