Winter brings its own set of characteristic landscapes, with blankets of snow and powdery tree branches. Though the winter storms batter us and chill us to the bone, the sun shines onto the sparkling snow thereafter, reminding us that You make beauty out of all things.

Good afternoon parents and Carers

Winter is certainly upon us!!!!!   Unfortunately the cold weather makes us more susceptible to  colds, flu and respiratory illnesses. We are indoors more often allowing these viruses to pass more easily to one another. Please if your child is feeling sick please keep them at home.  I understand ongoing absences are challenging for families however it is essential for the health and wellbeing of our schools community. Indicators of cold and flu include: coughing, sneezing, headaches, lethargy, congestions, aches and pains.

The Victorian Government will continue to provide Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) for use by students and staff for the remainder of Term 2.  It is now recommended RATs are used by students and staff only when symptomatic.  RATs are also required to be used for 5 days if a student or staff member is a close contact of a confirmed case and they are attending or working at a school.

Over the past few weeks our students have participated in many liturgies and sporting events.  We are so grateful for the way they have represented our school displaying maturity, consideration of others and respect.  You should be very proud too :).

I hope you all have a relaxing long weekend

CROSS COUNTRY / FUN RUN NEWS
On Thursday 26th May, the Sacred Heart Prep-Six students joined the P-12 Yarrawonga College for a fantastic day of exercise with their annual Fun Run and Cross Country. Thanks to Carolyn Willett, from the P-12 College, the track, P-12 College helpers, music and the coffee van were ready to go! Thanks Caz and staff for all your help in setting up the day.
The students headed down to Chinaman’s Island to walk, jog or run the 1km, 2km & 3km courses set up around the island. In coolish conditions, the students from both schools enjoyed
the opportunity to mingle and compete in their different age groups. It was great to see many parents, grandparents, friends and family come down and support the students at Chinaman’s Island.
The P-2 Fun Run was a fantastic event and it was great to see a large number of parents, grandparents and families join in the spirit of the event by coming down to support the younger students as they gave it their best effort. After some stretching, dancing and warm ups, the students tackled the course.
The Yr 3-6 Sacred Heart students were competing to win the annual Cross-Country Shield. The final house results were very close between Loreto (Gold house), Fatima (Red House) Lourdes (Green House) and Mercy (Blue house).
Mercy, 535 points, took out the 2022 Cross Country Shield, followed by Loreto on 420 points, Lourdes 418 points and Fatima 414 points in 4th place.
The 1st place getters in the Yrs 3-6 age groups were as follows:

9 Yr Girls- Georgie Burns
10 Yr Boys- Taylor Lewis
10 Yr Girls- Amelie Coll
11 Yr Boys- Harry Ramsdale
11 Yr Girls- Winnie Heffernan
12/13 Yr Boys- Sam Osborne

We thank our families for donating money and Lynne Brear, Michelle Connell, Lisa Boyer and the rest of the team for putting together the yummy treat packs of cupcakes and fruit drinks. All the money raised will go towards the Rosemary Cullen Foundation. Thank you also to Robyn Connell and Robynne Cope for their help at the finishing table with scoring.
Last Friday 3rd June, 39 students represented our school at the Ovens & Mitta Divisional Cross-Country event in Wangaratta. After a two-year absence due to COVID, all the students were a little nervous about what to expect when competing at a higher level. And compete they did! All students are to be applauded for their efforts. 10 students were successful in qualifying for the Regional Championships to be held in Benalla on Friday June 17th.

This years’ theme centres around Being Brave & Making Change. This is the challenge to us all - to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for all. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year Reconciliation Australia are asking everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in our daily lives – where we live, work, play and socialise.

Today’s presentation from The Resilience Project is all about Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is our ability to be calm and present at any given moment. We practise this by slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time.

Thousands of studies have proven benefits include reduced stress, reduced rumination, increased memory, increased cognitive function and physical health benefits through improved immunity.

NEWS FROM THE Y - AFTER SCHOOL CARE
We have had a very busy few weeks.
With Winter upon us we are now inside by 5.15pm and insisting they are wearing their jumpers by 4.30.
We have been covering  lots of topics about nature, including:
International day of the bee
International day of the turtle
Making our own nature journals
Nature collecting on walks around the school

We have also been exploring Sorry Day and Reconciliation week

A new challenge we have introduced for the children is “The Taste Test”
So far they have had to opportunity to try:
Persimmon
Pomegranate
Gooseberries
Lychees
Jack Fruit
Dried Figs
Lychees and Persimmon were the biggest hit. The Jack fruit no one wanted to try, they could not get past its strong odour.

School holidays are only 3 weeks away and the program is set to go. Any current families should be able to book now for the Winter Vacation Holidays. We have booked out in the past, so if there is a certain day your children would like to attend, get in quick .
The full program is on display on the doors of the Mercy Centre
