PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Good Afternoon Everyone

On Monday August 8th, we celebrated the Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, our first Australian saint, giving thanks for this extraordinary woman. Mary MacKillop was an educator, a pioneer and a leader, someone who had compassion for others regardless of their situation. Strengthened by her belief in the value of education as the foundation for a fulfilling life, Mary’s motto was ‘never see a need without doing something about it’.  Mary’s legacy of helping all people in need, calls us to create more connected, stronger communities inspired by her beautiful example. Through our Graduate Outcomes all at Sacred Heart aspire to grow more  like this wonderful Australian saint each and every day.

It is hard to believe we are halfway through the term!!!! Learning Conversations begin next week. These conversations are an important part of our formal Reporting process and a great opportunity to discuss your child's achievements and how we can collectively support them in their learning. Please log into PAM to book in time that works best for you.

Congratulations to Spencer Cowan ( yr 6) who competed on Saturday in the Regional Public Speaking competition hosted by the Yarrawonga Rotary Club. Spencer’s speech focused on Winston Churchill and his impromptu speech focused on Being part of a community.  We are so proud of his achievements in public speaking and wish him luck in the district event In Girgarre at the end of the month.

Congratulations to our Sacred Heart Italian Choir and Music Choir participating in their first  ever Eisteddfod.  We are so proud of the commitment of our year 5 and 6 students who give up most of their lunch times , along with the fabulous work of Mrs Christine Cussen and Signora  Cardamone for their time and dedication in preparing the choir’s. I am so proud to announce the choir took out both first and second place.

Take Care,
Arn

Confirmation Eucharist
It is with great excitement that we have a date for our Confirmation and First Eucharist.  Bishop Shane Mackinlay will be the celebrant for this very special occasion for 75 of our students. Some of these children have been waiting two years for this to happen and should be proud of their resilience. There will be two ceremonies, Saturday evening at 6pm and Sunday morning at 10am, both to be held in the MPB. All children from Year 4,5 and 6 who have previously enrolled for the sacraments should have received an email from me last Thursday. If you didn’t receive this email please contact me at school ASAP via phone or email. Anyone who received the form and hasn’t returned it I encourage to do so by the end of the week.
More information about preparation and the ceremony will be sent closer to the date.

RECYCLING
Our year 6 RESPECT Team along with the assistance of Pauline from Sweet and Sour Sisters are encouraging us all to recycle. The milk drinks that can be purchased at our canteen are able to be returned for money. There are tubs in each space for these containers.
All money raised will go to the Rosemary Cullen Foundation.
A big thank you to Pauline for being the driving force behind this.

Feast of Mary MacKillop
Monday was the feast of Mary MacKillop a very special woman in the Catholic Church especially in Australia. As our very first Australian Saint and a woman who did so much for children, the poor and other women, she should be honoured. Even 110 years after her death her message; “Never see a need without doing something about it” is a good one for us all to follow. She has been the focus of our prayer this week as well as our RE lessons and even some of our art lessons.

Feast of the Assumption
This coming Monday we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption
of Mary into heaven.
Every 15th of August the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady when according to our faith, the Holy Mother, "having completed her course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”. The word Assumption comes from the Latin word meaning to “take up.”
Mary is another very special woman in our church and another role model for us all.

Sacred Heart Parish
Fr Steve is making steady progress, however he is still to receive a lot of treatment and we ask that everyone keeps him in their prayers.
There will be a Liturgy of the Word with Communion Sat at 6pm and Sunday at 10am and then regular Mass the weekend after.

 Have a great week everyone,

Meegan McInness

Yr 5/6 Lightning Premiership 2022

After two years of COVID cancellations, our Lightning Premiership Sporting carnival was back. Mrs Willett and Mr Carroll and the two schools, Sacred Heart Primary and Yarrawonga P-12 College combined together to host the carnival. Fourteen schools travelled to Yarrawonga, the bulk of them
from the Cobram, Katunga, Strathmerton, Nathalia, Numurkah and surrounding areas. The sports carnival had soccer, netball, softball and football as its sports. We used the Vic Park facilities thanks to the local Netball association, the Yarra Mul Cricket Club and Moira Shire. Sacred Heart Primary and the Yarrawonga P-12 College accommodated the softball and soccer teams which was
appreciated. The highlight was seeing the hundreds of students, families, staff, parents, friends and grandparents supporting, cheering and watching the students enjoy being out and about at the different venues. We were grateful to have some yummy canteen, food and drink choices thanks to the Lions Club, Sweet & Sour Sisters and the P-12 College. We also thank Michael Clear and Jason Whiteley for co-ordinating the softball, Jason Bassett the soccer and Carolyn Willett and Dean Carroll for the netball and footy.
Our Yr 5/6 students did the school proud and our teachers and support staff on the day helped manage, coach, guide and have fun with their students regardless of the results. Mrs Lawless (Soccer Yr 5/6), Mr Mills (Football Yr 6), Mrs Wollington (Netball Yr 6), Miss Schutt & Mrs Stiles (Football Yr 5)
and Mrs O’Dwyer (Netball Yr 5) spent the day with the students. The teachers have put together a short summary about the different sports outlined below. Thanks Mrs Powell for organising the permissions and First Aid kits. Andrew Brew and Nikki Connell helped out with the coaching at the
soccer and Robyn Connell was a great help and support at the netball. It was great to get support from Sacred Heart College with approx. twenty Year 8 students assisting with coaching and umpiring
duties. Results wise, we were fortunate to have one of our Year 6 girls teams win the Netball shield in Division 1, our senior soccer team won the soccer title, the Yr 6 boys came runner up in Division 1 football, the Year 5 boys footy team took out the Division 2 title and the Yr 5 netball teams finished in
the top 3 of their pools.
Year 6 Football
The Grade 6 boys could not have represented Sacred Heart any better. Their effort and sportsmanship were exemplary from the first bounce of game one until the final siren of the Grand Final. We had two massive wins against the two Cobram schools, but two very narrow losses to P-12 put only a slight dampener on things. We led for most of the Grand Final but were overrun in the last few minutes. We had no one on the bench, so every Sacred Heart player participated in every minute of every game.
Great stuff, fellas. You did our school proud. We thank the Year 8 College students, Grace Richmond, Archie Jaques, Miller Smith, Lach Lee-Conway, Mitch Tyson and Baxter Donovan who helped coach and umpire the day.
Year 5/6 Soccer
On Friday two very excited Year 5 and 6 Soccer teams headed off to Yarra P-12 to take on teamsfrom Yarrawonga, Cobram and Numurkah in the Lightning Premiership. It was the first time Soccer had been included so there was the added excitement of being the first teams to play. All up 8 teams were entered, which meant each of our teams played 7 matches. All teams were given country names, with our teams being France and Belgium. Throughout the course of the day our teams experienced wins, draws and losses but no matter what the score their effort and attitude were second to none. Great sportsmanship, teamwork and encouragement were on display as teams
played their hearts out in each and every match. There were great goals scored and amazing saves by our goalkeepers, as well as some brilliant team play which led to many turnovers and goal assists. No matter how experienced or inexperienced players were, their skills and confidence grew throughout the day…as did their smiles. They all had a great day! At the end of the round-robin
matches Belgium was equal first with 6 wins and 1 loss and, after a huge win in their last game, had the best percentage of goals for and against and won the day. If winning wasn’t exciting enough, they were even happier to see that ‘Sacred Heart 2022’ will be the first name on the trophy!
Congratulations to all our Soccer players who represented their school so magnificently. We were so proud of the way you participated and supported each other all day.
Special thanks must go to Jason Bassett from Yarra P-12 who did a fantastic job of coordinating the day. And another very big thank you to Archie Skehan, Will Thomson, Ollie Nagle, Jobe Kennedy and Lenny Lonergan from Sacred Heart College who joined us on the day and acted as team managers
for our teams. Your help was greatly appreciated. Thank you too to Nikki Connell for coming along to help our Year 5 team.

Year 6 Netball
Friday morning brought lots of excitement and energy for our Year 6 netball girls, who had been long awaiting the return of the Lightning Premiership. Sacred Heart fielded three teams this year who were
coached and managed by Sacred Heart College students Maddi Kelly, Darla Lawless and Keeley
Blick. Our Year Six girls played their hearts out all day and can be incredibly proud of the respectful manner in which they conducted themselves. There were smiles a plenty, high fives and many laughs shared throughout the day, as the girls thrived in the beautiful sunshine.
It was wonderful to see our two Pool B teams develop in confidence throughout the day and play with great determination and sportsmanship. Our 1sts team continued their success from the Term 2 Ovens and Mitta Zone Sports Day where they came runners up, to remain undefeated in the rounds
and make their way through to the Grand Final. The girls faced a very skilled Cobram Primary School and had to keep composed as the teams remained neck and neck in both halves. In the final minutes, our fabulous cheer squad of fellow students and parents, helped the girls get over the line to win in a
very tight contest 8-6
We would like to thank Caz Willett from YCP-12 for her exemplary organisation of the netball tournament and Robyn Connell for assisting her to make sure everything was in order down at the local netball courts, ensuring the day ran smoothly for our girls. A huge thanks to Maddi, Darla and Keeley for
supporting and encouraging our girls and to their fellow Sacred Heart College students Sophie Coghill, Alani Peterson, Mylah Kennedy and Iris Elliott who umpired all day for us with minimal breaks. It was sensational seeing so many parents around the courts supporting our girls. A massive
thanks to everyone for making our Lightning Premiership Day a wonderful success!
Netball Year 5
The Year 5 netballers had a wonderful time participating in the Lightning Premiership last Friday.
They wore the Sacred Heart colours proudly, and conducted themselves in such a brilliant manner on and off the court. There was a real buzz around the carnival, being the first time in 2 years students have been able to meet with different schools and enjoy a day of friendly competition. A range of abilities and experience took to the court. Girls who had no previous experience playing netball, walked away at the end of the day eager to take up the sport, and all with smiles on their faces. What a fun day out, well done girls!
Football Year 5
The Year 5 Boys started the day off with a bang! Having wins over P-12 College and St Francis Nathalia in the rounds. They headed into a tough match against the undefeated Katanga where they played well and won a ticket to the grand final against Cobram. Kicking against the wind was a challenge for both teams but Sacred Heart held on for the win. The boys should be proud of the
sportsmanship they displayed to other schools and within the team. They were a pleasure to coach!
Congratulations to the School Choir for representing our school so beautifully on Tuesday. The choir entered this 5/6 Primary School section twice, one with an Italian theme, singing the popular, 'You Are My Sunshine' with a section in Italian and the toe tapping, 'Tintarella di Luna'. The second performance was 'Top Of The World", and the beautiful Aboriginal song, "Ngara Burra Ferra" made famous by The Sapphires.
The students were fabulous in both performances, and here are some of the judges' comments.
" A well disciplined choir, with excellent stage presentation".
"So lovely to see so many happy faces, and great to see you watching your conductor."
"A most enjoyable performance with good rhythmic tempo".
" I loved the action accompanying these songs. Your facial expressions show me you are really enjoying your singing".
We are pleased to say we got 1st and 2nd for our performances in this section.
Thank you to Signorina Cardamone and Signora Cussen for preparing them so well and leading them on the day.
Just a reminder to notify the school office on 03) 57443339 if your child has tested positive for COVID 19. We can arrange for work to to be sent home if suitable.

This standard emphasises the vital role that school leaders and governing authorities have in establishing:

Schools must take deliberate steps to promote child safety and wellbeing and protect children by
  • embedding and promoting a child safety culture at all levels of the organisation
  • school leaders actively modelling such a culture
  • ensuring transparent governance arrangements.

Sacred Heart as taken the following actions to comply with this standard:

    • Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
    • Child Safety Code of Conduct
  • records and implements risk management actions to make sure children are safe in the school environment
  • monitors, annually reviews and evaluates child safety and wellbeing risks
  • ensure records relevant to child safety and wellbeing are created, maintained and disposed of by Public Record Office Victoria Record keeping Standards
  • make sure school staff and volunteers understand their obligations in information sharing and recordkeeping.
Sacred Heart has established expectations to embed child safety and wellbeing in leadership, governance and culture;

  • Promote regular open discussion on child safety issues at leadership team meetings, staff meetings and school advisory board meetings.

Sacred Heart will Seek input by:

  • Asking students what matters to them, what makes them feel safe and whether the school's child safety strategies are meeting their needs, through regular class discussions.
  • Seek input from staff, volunteers, families and the school community. Ask what the school does well, and what can be improved.
  • Consult with people external to the school who have additional expertise, such as the Catholic Education Office or other external agencies.

"A culture of child safety is driven by school leaders and supported by effective systems and processes."

Trouble with transport?

Moira Shire Council is undertaking a review of community transport needs and services within the municipality and seeks input from people of all ages from school students to older adults.

We want to understand how people without access to their own vehicle are managing their transport needs and any difficulties they are experiencing accessing activities that are part of community living.

If you know someone who meets these criteria, please encourage them to complete the survey by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MSC_CTSR or scanning the QR code.

It should take under 10 minutes to complete and will provide information so that Council can advocate for improved services across the Moira area. The survey closes on 2 September 2022.
