Principals Report

A big thank you to everyone who attended our Fathers Day breakfast.  It was fabulous to see everyone celebrating the wonderful fathers, grandfathers, stepdads and important people in our students' lives.  A big thank you also to the staff who happily gave up their morning to cook and serve the breakfast, Special thanks also goes to Karen Vodesek and all the mums who helped out at the Fathers Day stall.  Our students were so thrilled with their purchases and I am sure they put a big smile on the faces of all our dads.

A huge thank you to Pat Cummins for his organisation of the relocation of our bike shed and an archive container, in preparation of our building project which will commence early next term.  We also want to express our thanks to Justin (Fred) Cummins, John Cummins, Dom Connell, and Terry Dowling for your labour, help and support.  An extended thank you also to Luke Buerckner and John Coulter and Shane McBurnie for your generosity in supplying appropriate machinery to clear, level, dig, drain and transportation (crane) of structures and Matt Judd for letting us dump fill on his job site.  We are so grateful for all your help and guidance especially in some very challenging weather conditions.

We would like to invite all families to our athletics carnival this Friday 16th September to cheer on all our students in their events.  The carnival will take place on school grounds starting at 9.30am.

NAPLAN results have arrived.  Results will be sent out to families early next week.

There are still many viruses that continue to linger within the school such as gastro, school sores…etc.  We ask parents to be vigilant in looking for signs and symptoms.  I have included a link to the Department of Health Infectious Diseases page.

Finally on behalf of all staff at Sacred Heart we would like to thank you for your ongoing support this term.  It has been a very busy term however we have witnessed wonderful growth in our students both emotionally and academically.  You should be very proud of what your child/ren have achieved.  Have a wonderful break.

Take care
Arn

Confirmation Eucharist
This week families will receive an email confirming the date of their
child’s Confirmation, First Eucharistic Ceremony. If you don’t receive
this information by Friday afternoon please let me know.

Ganesh Charturthu
Over the last week, the whole school has been exploring the Hindu
Festival of Ganesh Charturthi. Ganesh is the Hindu god of wisdom.
Last Wednesday all classes listened to the story of Ganesh and then
made clay sculptures of the god. Our Year 6 Leaders and and some
children from other grades will walk to the foreshore this Thursday
and throw their sculpture into the Murray River, as is the tradition in
India. This learning experience has provided a wonderful opportunity
for our school community to be exposed to other religions through
the eyes of Christianity. It has also been great to celebrate the rich
diversity of our own community.

Fr Henry
We welcome Father Henry to Sacred Heart Parish. Fr Henry is visiting
the Sandhurst Diocese from Nigeria and will be spending the next ten
weeks in our parish.

Have a great week everyone,
Meegan McInness
Catholic Identity Leader.

Sandhurst Arts on Show

Last Thursday many of our students from grade 5 and 6 participated in Sandhurst Arts on Show [SAoS] and they, along with students from other Sandhurst schools, were sensational. They danced and sang and performed for the audience with such enthusiasm and enjoyment. Sandhurst schools value and promote the enormous talent and expertise in our young people and SAoS is another wonderful opportunity for our students to build confidence, resilience, teamwork and to celebrate their artistic gifts.
Thank you to Christine and Tanya for all your work in developing the talents of our students.

Buddy Benches

We are very fortunate to be involved with The Lions Club and the Tungamah Social Club who have been very busy making buddy benches for our students.  These were delivered this week by Mr Griffith and Mr Ellis from the Lions Club and have been placed around our school yard in Senior area, Canteen area and Foundation area.

What is the purpose of a buddy bench?

It's called a Buddy Bench. The idea is simple - if a child feels lonely, they can go to the bench as a signal that they need someone to play with. Another child will see them, go and talk to them and include them in their games.

A huge thank you to Karen Vodusek for her many years of dedication to our school. Karen has been the driving force that has ensured our annual Mother's Day and Father's Day Stalls have run smoothly for the past 11 years. Karen has coordinated the valuable parent volunteers and manages the task of picking and ordering the amazing presents for our stalls with ease.
Prep Billabong Ranch Echuca Excursion

Last Friday, with tummies full of bacon and egg rolls, fifty-two excited Foundation Students along with six teachers boarded a bus set for Billabong Ranch, just out of Echuca. There was a quiet buzz on the trip over, with the odd “Are we there yet?” questions thrown in there too.On arrival, the buzz grew! There was great excitement at the sighting of the animals, playgrounds, sheds, and Bungee trampolines. We all had a quick snack and toilet break and got straight into activities which included a rotation of Mini Golf, Bungee Trampolines and the Horse and Cart ride. All the students had the opportunity to have a go at each activity. There were a few holes in one at mini golf, front and back flips galore on the Bungee trampolines as well as lots of singing, bumping and bouncing on the horse and cart ride.
We finished our day with a picnic lunch before hopping back on the bus to head back to Sacred Heart. The trip home was significantly quieter with lots of tired little people having a bit of shut eye. It’s hard to tell if it was exhaustion or if the real motivator was the temptation of a chocolate from Mr Griffin.
Regardless, a fabulous day was had by all! We were blessed with early Spring weather, and everybody enjoyed being out and about! As always, we were complemented on the behaviour of our students by the staff at Billabong Ranch and Mark our bus driver. It is always so rewarding to hear this about our students at Sacred Heart Primary School. A BIG thankyou to Mrs Hargreaves for all of her organisation to make sure our day was such a success.

Ganesh Charthurthi Festival

Over the last week as a school community, we have been looking into the Hindu festival Ganesh Charthurthi. Ganesh is the Hindu god of Wisdom and is who Hindu’s often pray to in times of big decision making. As part of our learning each child across the school made a clay sculpture of Ganesh. As part of the festival some Year 6 children will be walking to the foreshore Thursday to throw the sculptures in the lake.

This has been a great opportunity as a school community to explore Christianity through the eyes of another faith community but also celebrate the rich diversity of our Sacred Heart Community.

Prep/Year 1 Mini Athletics

The Preps & Year 1 students got into the spirit of some Athletic's activities last week. Having been practising in their PE lessons, the students had some fun competing in a mini Olympics type Aths rotations to get points in the lead up to the Athletic's Carnival next week's. Mr Boulton and Mr Carroll had 6 rotations happening around the court and oval. They competed in Tunnel Ball, Under & Over, Basketball Relays, Rob the Nest, Bean Bag Throws, Egg & Spoon and Sack Races! The Prep & Year 1 students had a lot of fun mingling, laughing and competing. Mr Boulton announced some encouragement and resilience awards and the students joined together for some lunch to finish the session together.

Child Safe Standard 3 - Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.

  • SHPS provide opportunities for children and young people to participate and are responsive to their contributions, thereby strengthening confidence and engagement
  • SHS creates opportunities for children to express their views and participate in decisions that impact them. What is heard and learnt from children influences how we operate.
  • Staff and volunteers are supported to develop knowledge and skills to help children participate, express their views and raise their concerns
  • At SHPS the importance of friendships is recognised and support from peers is encouraged, to help children and young people feel safe and be less isolated. We have recently installed 3 Buddy Benches with discussions around their purpose taking place in the classrooms.
