Principals Report

Good Afternoon Families and Carers

Our opening school liturgy for 2023 was a beautiful celebration and a wonderful way to welcome the new school year.  Thanks to Mrs McInness for preparing the liturgy and our students for their prayerful participation.  A special thanks also to our parents, friends and parishioners who joined us for the celebration.

Next week we should see the commencement of our new building project.  The project will include a new learning space ( 4 spaces), a new STEM lab and a music/languages studio.  I feel like we have been waiting for this build to start for a very long time so I am thrilled we are finally going to see some action!

Our new date for ‘welcome drinks' will be Friday 24th March 5.30 to 7pm.  Please mark this date in your diary!!!! Venue to be confirmed.

Have a great week everyone

Opening Liturgy
Last Friday we celebrated the beginning of the year with a whole school liturgy at the MPB at Sacred Heart College. The theme for our liturgy was “Let Your Light Shine” and the children certainly did that as they enthusiastically participated during the liturgy. We were led by our new set of Year Six leaders and all our senior students were great examples to their Prep Buddies. It was wonderful to have so many family and friends join us.
Ash Wednesday
Last Wednesday afternoon we joined as a school community on the basketball court to commemorate Lent and Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the commencement of six weeks of Lent and the time we use as preparation for the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is a time of fasting, almsgiving and prayer. All students will be talking about Lent in their Religion lessons over the next few weeks.
Project Compassion
All families should have received a Project Compassion box and leaflet this week (Year 5tomorrow). Project Compassion is the major Fundraiser for Caritas Australia. Each week of Lent there is a different person with an important story to share about where the Project Compassion funds go. We as a school community will have a fundraiser later in the term.
On Wednesday 15th February, Arn and I along with Lew Nagle, Libby Dowling, Sr Helen and Cath Taylor attended the Diocesan Assembly in Shepparton. Over 350 people gathered as representatives across the Diocese. The purpose of the meeting was to prepare for the implementation of a Sandhurst Mission and Pastoral Council. There was a very vibrant feel about the gathering as we looked at how to have a more Synodal Church, being one that is more open, accountable and welcome to all. There was a lot of open and honest discussion.
The feedback from the Diocesan Assembly will help to guide the Sandhurst Mission and Pastoral Council during its establishment.
Have a great week everyone,

We begin our annual Lenten Project
Compassion journey by learning
about Laxmi, a 16-year-old girl living
in a remote district in Nepal where
almost half of the population live
below the poverty line. Tragedy
struck when Laxmi was ten and her
father passed away. Her father
worked hard to pay for his children's
education and, after losing him,
Laxmi was at risk of falling further
into extreme poverty.
With the support of Caritas
Australia’s partner, Caritas Nepal,
Laxmi joined a child's club at her
school. She developed the skills and
confidence to become a leader,
advocating for clean water taps at
her school.
Laxmi is now excelling in her studies
and working towards her dream of
becoming a civil engineer. She
continues to be involved in the
child's club, mentoring the next
generation of young leaders at her

old school.

This week through Project
Compassion, we learn about
Tereesa, a Gamilaroi woman from
Western Sydney who struggled with
homelessness while raising her four
children as a single mother.
Seeking a better future for her
family, Tereesa joined Baabayn
Aboriginal Corporation’s Young
Mums and Bubs Group, supported
by Caritas Australia. Baabayn
helped Tereesa access housing and
psychological support. Tereesa was
also able to hear stories from
Indigenous Elders and reconnect
with her culture.
Today, Tereesa is studying a
certificate in Community Services so
that she can strengthen her skills
and give back to her community.
Tereesa now works at Baabayn,
supporting young mothers and
mentoring the next generation of
young people.

Just a reminder for children using the Pedestrian Crossing with Lisa, you must walk across. Pushing either bikes or scooters, not riding them across.
Also, cars are not permitted to park across the pedestrian crossing when dropping children off to school.

News from the Y Team

The children have been enjoying our new tray table. Last week we used it for coloured sand art. Mia came up with a great Idea for this week. A camping play table. With river, tent camp fire etc.
On Friday we repainted our YMCA sign fresh and new for this year.
Evie’s family donated a collection of boxes to us. So the children have been getting very creative with their box art. We were also donated some scratch art shapes. Which the children got excited about.
Planning is already underway for the next school holidays: we will go to the movies, and visit Kidstown adventure playground.
We will also be operating on Monday the24th of April as a Curriculum day (full day program)
Over the last few weeks we have been working on the project of collecting Data. Which was started by Tippi, Lexi and Lakshmi. We have been looking at ourselves, our families and the makeup of the YMCA OSHC community at Sacred Heart. I have introduced the concept of demographics. Through this project I hope the service as a whole will be more inclusive and accepting of the differences in the YMCA community, including the wider school and town.
