Winter brings its own set of characteristic landscapes, with blankets of snow and powdery tree branches. Though the winter storms batter us and chill us to the bone, the sun shines onto the sparkling snow thereafter, reminding us that You make beauty out of all things.

Principals Report

Dear parents and Carers

Winter is certainly upon us!!!!!   Unfortunately the cold weather makes us more susceptible to  colds, flu and respiratory illnesses. We are indoors more often allowing these viruses to pass more easily to one another. Please if your child is feeling sick please keep them at home.  I understand ongoing absences are challenging for families however it is essential for the health and wellbeing of our schools community. Indicators of cold and flu include: coughing, sneezing, headaches, lethargy, congestions, aches and pains.

Our Scholastic Book Fair opened on Monday and has been an instant hit with our students throughout the school. Besides various genres of books for different ages, the Book Fair also has some cute and funky stationery for sale.

Did you know that the more books that our students purchase, the more free books we get as a school? Your support of this  literary event is key in helping us obtain new books and resources for our library collection and classrooms. More books means more choice, which means our students get to read the books they want to read. The right book can ignite a passion for reading, so we encourage families to work together to create a reading culture at home. Reading expands the mind and nourishes the imagination.

To further celebrate our Book Fair we would like to invite all our families to be a part of our Reader's Workshop Learning Walk this Friday.  We will discuss Sacred Heart's reading philosophy and tips and tricks on how you can support your child/ren with their reading at home. We will also take everyone on a learning walk through the school. This is a great opportunity to see the new Reader's Workshop in action and finish at the Book Fair so you can have an opportunity to look at the books on offer. If you would like to join us, we will be meeting in the staffroom at 10:00am. If you have any more questions, please call the office.

Semester one Reports will be available on PAM next week. It has been a pleasure reading the reports and seeing the learning and many achievements that have taken place over the first half of the year. Well done to the students for all their efforts. Parents you should be very proud!  Thank you to the teachers for the time spent ensuring each report provided personal, valuable feedback. Please take the time to read and reflect on the report together with your child as this is an integral part of their development as a learner. Learning Conversations will take place Week 2, Term 3 but if you wish to discuss anything prior to that, please contact your child’s teacher.

Congratulations to all our students who made us very proud through their participation in our school cross country event. It was also terrific to see so many parents in the yard and at Chinamen’s Island cheering the students on.

Congratulations also to our ‘Courage’ team who attended the Reconciliation Mass in Nathalia. Unfortunately we have to postpone our Fire Carriers Commissioning at Boat Rock to a later date due to wet weather.

Finally it is with sadness I inform you all  Ms Emma Kerr will be taking leave until the end of the year, at the commencement of term 3.  I would like to thank Emma for all her dedication and hard work and look forward to working with her again in the future.

Enjoy the long weekend

Take Care

Sacred Heart Day
On Friday June 23rd we will be celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart with a combined Mass with Sacred Heart College.  Bishop Shane Mackinlay is celebrating our Feast Day for us. This is always a special day on our calendar and you are all welcome to join us for this celebration. Mass will be held at 10am in the MPB. We hope many of you can be a part of this special Mass.

As part of our feast day celebrations we will be holding Sacred Heart Has Got Talent in the Mercy Centre after an early lunch. We are calling for singers, dancers, magicians, comedians or any other talent our students possess. It will be held in the Mercy Centre so space will be minimal and we encourage acts no longer than two minutes. We will be calling for entries next Tuesday.

Students are asked to donate a gold coin on this Friday as part of our donation to the St Vinnies Winter Appeal.

Sacraments
The Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist for our Year Three  and Four students will be held in the second half of the year. As soon as I have any dates you will be informed.

Any questions please feel free to contact me here at school or via email.
Have a great week,
Meegan McInness

THANK YOU from the Rosemary Cullen Foundation.

Our recent Cupcake/Prima offer at the
Cross Country/Fun run has raised over $1000.
All proceeds are donated to the Rosemary Cullen Foundation,
.
who have made a commitment to a 4 year sponsorship of a child from the Notre Dame Secondary School in Kulamon.
Kulamon is a remote area housing the indigenous Manubo Dulangan tribes in the Mindanao Region.
The 4 year sponsorship includes university fees, accommodation costs, food and books.

The support our Sacred Heart families provide to Rosemary Cullen Foundation fundraising is extremely valued.

Special thanks to
Pauline and Seona from Sweet and Sour Sisters
for their generous help in providing ease of ordering via the
Canteen Qkr! app.
BUS SAFETY
We are very thankful to Barry from Fallon's Bus Services who visited us recently to promote bus safety to our students.
Barry spoke about the importance of always wearing our seatbelts, waiting until the bus has come to a stop before standing up, and encouraged everyone to look out for each other by reminding each other to always wear a seatbelt.
2023 Sacred Heart Fun Run & Cross Country
Sacred Heart Prep-Six students joined the P-12 Yarrawonga College on a beautiful sunny winter’s day for the annual Fun Run and Cross Country. Thanks to Carolyn Willett, from the P-12 College, the track, the P-12 College & SH College helpers, the music and the coffee van were ready to go! Thanks Caz and staff for all your help in setting up the day. The students headed down at different times during the day to Chinaman’s Island to walk, jog or run the 1km, 2km & 3km courses set up around the island. The students always enjoy the opportunity to mingle and compete in their different age groups. It was great to see many parents, grandparents, friends and family come down and support the students at Chinaman’s Island.
The P-2 Fun Run is an excitable event and it was great to see a large number of parents, grandparents and families join in the spirit of the event by coming down to support the younger students as they gave it their best effort. After some stretching, dancing and warm ups, the students tackled the course and crossed the line and a job well done! Our Yr 6 sport leaders were very supportive and great leaders for our younger students.
The Yr 3-6 Sacred Heart students were competing to win the annual Cross-Country Shield. The final house results were very close between Loreto (Gold house), Fatima (Red House) Lourdes (Green House) and Mercy (Blue house).
Mercy, 475 points, took out the 2023 Cross Country Shield, followed by Lourdes on 439 points, Loreto 427 points and Fatima 414 points in 4th place.
The 1st place getters in the Yrs 3-6 age groups were as follows:
9 Yr Boys- Danny Ryan
9 Yr Girls- Stella Hicks
10 Yr Boys- Todd Lawless
10 Yr Girls- Amelie Coll
11 Yr Boys- Taylor Lewis
11 Yr Girls- Sienna Gallagher
12/13 Yr Boys- Max Coll
12/13 Yr Girls- Winnie Heffernan
We thank our families for purchasing cupcakes and fruit drinks and Lynne Brear and the Rosemary Cullen team for putting together the yummy treat packs of cupcakes and fruit drinks for all our students. All the money raised will go towards the Rosemary Cullen Foundation. Thank you also to Robyn Connell for helping at the finishing table with scoring for the Yr 3-6’s. Well done to all involved in making our schools event a successful one.
Lastly, a huge shout out to Mr Carroll for making the day such an amazing success!

News from the Y
Our Yarning Circle: dreaming stories. Over the last week our dreaming story of 'Tiddalik the Frog' is based on an Aboriginal dream from South Gippsland, Victoria. We have used the Idea of stories to get a better understanding of what oral history is.
This week our story is “The Moon and the Rainbow”, from southern Queensland. We will also be looking at what the land means to the Aboriginal people.
Another culture/language is becoming more apparent in our service too, Italian is being used often. We even have Signora Cardamoni looking up words in Italian for us to use.
Some of this week’s activities: clay creations, sock puppets, beading, water colour painting, paper planes, football, and basketball.
The School holiday program is open now for bookings.
