Starting school can be both challenging and exciting. A positive start to school leads to better learning and wellbeing outcomes for your child, both
during transition and beyond. It helps to support your child’s continuity of learning and development and supports them to feel secure, confident and connected to new people and places.
At Sacred Heart Primary Yarrawonga, we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible. We want children to view starting school as an exciting
adventure. We have a range of strategies in place to foster a stress-free transition, including Preschool Visits, Transition Statements, Buddies Program and a Parent Information Session.
Transition Program
Our Prep Transition Program aims to help children and parents become familiar with our school facilities. Incoming students will meet the Prep teachers and experience fun, engaging learning activities that introduce them to the structure of school.
Conducted over 4 sessions, it gives your child the chance to establish positive relationships with teachers and peers, as well as feel comfortable, confident and supported in their new learning environment.
Our extensive and exciting school transition program, is conducted in Term 4 for all children
school at Sacred Heart the following year.
We encourage all 2023 enrolled prep students to attend all transition sessions where possible.
Parent Information Session
Our Transition Program culminates in a Parent Information Session with lots of information and tips to prepare your child for school and what to expect from the learning programs. Parents meet other prep parents and our staff, and find out more about how to assist their children to prepare for school and what to expect from the learning programs.
Pre School Visits
We believe the transition between kindergarten and formal schooling should be as seamless as possible. We place an emphasis on talking with your child’s preschool educator. The conversations help us to make the right choices for class placements for your child.
Transition Learning and Development Statement
Your child’s early childhood teacher will write a Transition Learning and Development Statement (Transition Statement). This Transition Statement will summarise your child’s interests, skills and abilities. It will also identify individual approaches and teaching strategies so that your child’s prep teacher can quickly get to know your child and plan appropriate learning and teaching programs.
Buddies Program
Our Buddies program kicks off with the Transition Program. Incoming Prep students are matched up with a Grade 5 student who continues to be their buddy throughout Prep.
Buddies visit the Preschools and meet the children that will be attending Sacred Heart Primary the following year. Buddies will greet their Preps in the morning and have lunch together during Term One.
Our students really enjoy the responsibility of being a buddy. This is a highlight for many and a fond memory they look back on when they were in Prep at Sacred Heart Primary
